POTENTIAL ROLES:
Duke Senior:
regal demeanor, yet bohemian in mind-set, living in exile having been banished by his younger brother (Duke Fredrick) but not angry (rather relieved at his change in fate), natural—but reluctant—leader, father of Rosalind.
Duke Frederick/Corin
strong and severe, usurper and banisher of Duke Senior, short tempered, obsessed with power. Frederick is the father of Celia and uncle of Rosalind. During the production he is “converted” by Adam and assumes the guise of Corin until the final revelation at the conclusion. Corin is a gentle, warm and kind shepherd who is welcoming to Rosalind and Celia in the Forest of Arden—very much an idealized father figure.
Touchstone:
fool at Duke Senior’s Court, dry-witted, quick, highly intelligent, loyal and faithful to Rosalind and Celia, surprised and grateful for his love in Audrey.
Oliver:
older brother of Orlando and family heir, focused exclusively on power, cruel and vindictive to Orlando, transformed by his love for Celia.
Orlando:
younger brother to Oliver, honorable, eager, passionate and yet blinded by his desire, has no sense of his physical mortality, full of potential.
Jaques:
philosopher and commentator on life, dark demeanor and yet refined, sad yet constantly surprised by life, very intelligent, on a par with Touchstone.
Adam:
focused, wise but child-like, has life experience.
Silvius:
shepherd in the Forest of Arden, country-bumpkin, not too bright but driven by his love for Phoebe. Potential double for Charles (the wrestler).
Rosalind:
highly intelligent, strong, passionate, regal, daughter of Duke Senior, has a strong sense or morality, knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
Celia:
daughter of Duke Frederick, mature enough to know he is morally corrupt, intelligent, romantic, follower of Rosalind (her cousin), sensitive yet assertive when she needs to be.
Phoebe:
shepherdess, rough around the edges, unrefined, is a ‘big fish in a small pond’, tease and manipulative to Silvius.
